2020 Wes Gavett Memorial Fund Distribution

Giving Back

In 2019, the SWANA Beaver Chapter was proud to host the inaugural Wes Gavett Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament was not only a lot of fun, it was also a huge success. The money raised during the event was just recently donated to two very deserving foundations that were near and dear to Wes.

The first donation, in the amount of $7,000, was donated to the Oregon Food Bank. The Oregon Food Bank has a mission to eliminate hunger and its root causes. The donation will help to support this mission by providing food to Oregon residents that are in need.

The second donation, in the amount of $10,000, was given to the Small Steps Project. The Small Steps Project is dedicated to supporting children around the world who live on dumps and survive from scavenging. They aim to raise awareness, through film, of the unacceptable hardships that they face. They also deliver shoes, hygiene kits and emergency aid to protect children in the dump environment, followed by sustainable solutions to enable children to take small steps out of the dumps and into education. The donation made to this organization will be used on a new project putting in a water, hygiene, and sanitation (WASH) unit in Ngong, Kenya. The WASH unit will be built on a site in conjunction with a children’s playground, club house, and feeding program. Small Steps is in the process of moving and resettling the inhabitants off the landfill so the local government can rehabilitate the area (landfill). When the community has been resettled, the WASH will be dedicated and a plaque honoring Wes will be installed.
